"An excellent read. Oh the corruption of "big-time" football programs for the "almighty" win. The author was a scapegoat for this program. After-all it seems in this life only the honest people are ostracized and then felons go untouched."

  • Outstanding reflections by Tony Franklin on his experiences as an assistant coach at Kentucky under Hal Mumme. Franklin promotes the book as the good, the bad, and the ugly of his time at UK and that seems accurate. Interesting observations by Franklin about ability and morals of high school coaches vs. D1 college coaches. Helpful material on coaching staff chemistry builders and destroyers. He uses a universal lesson to give each chapter an identity and uses events from his time at UK to illustrate the lesson. I began to follow Franklin's career when I became aware of his Offensive System; I knew he was affiliated with Hal Mumme, Mike Leach, etc. but this book connects the dots. I've followed Hal Mumme since his days at Valdosta State after reading articles about him in American Football Quarterly in 1996. The book paints HC Mumme and assistants Major and Bassett as insecure and petty men who were leaders that demanded service, not servant leaders. Great companion piece to Three and Out (Rich Rod at Michigan), Meat Market (Ole Miss Recruiting), and Swing Your Sword by Mike Leach. Recommended for high school football coaches, especially "Air Raid" disciples.
  • Mostly fussing about politics and who disliked each other and why.
  • An excellent read. Oh the corruption of "big-time" football programs for the "almighty" win. The author was a scapegoat for this program. After-all it seems in this life only the honest people are ostracized and then felons go untouched.
  • good book
  • If Tony Franklin says it is true you can take it to the bank. This book is more than just an account of the Mumme Era. The approach that Tony has used to tell his story is set forth in lessons that apply to all walks of life. You do not have to be a football coach or fan to understand the valuable lessons brought forth in this book.
Some will read this book and say there is no way that what is written can be true. I truly believe what is said in this book about the Mumme era is a correct accout of what happended. Tony Franklin is a man of character who as his book states is a stand up type person.
Read the book with an open mind. Many will not know the names of the coaches and players mentioned but you can relate many of the lessons taught to your personel life. The things that happened at a division 1 SEC school will boogle your mind.
  • This is a very insightful look into major college football from someone at the top of the profession.
