"The title refers to an ancient worship of Adonis in Lebanon. On a mostly walking tour of Lebanon before their civil war Thubron encountered the wide variety of people who now live there. His stratagem was to arrive in a small town late in the day without reservations and find someone who would put him up for the night and chat with him in their own home. In this way he met all of the factions in that diverse country. That is what I wanted most to read about. He also recounted the history and traditions as he traveled, beginning with the gods that were worshiped before Adonis, and missing no detail from that time forward. I began to find it too much, so that I would skip much of the history to get to his next experience, which is what gave me the flavor that I wanted of current Lebanon. Some of it I could not skip, for he is such a wise observer that he sees the ways that the past influences the present, and those insights are part of what makes him such a good read."

- a very interesting read. by the dean of travel writers, Mr. Thubron.
Lebanon is a country with a very interesting history and incredibly beautiful scenery. I was privileged to visit it back in the 1970s when Beirute was still the "The Paris of the East".
Current political events cast a very tragic shadow upon this country and its people.
