Artichokes and Grace Kristen Falde Smith 9781732463028 Books Reviews

  • I found Artichokes and Grace to be a very informative tome about the world of "caregiving.' This book illustrates how people grow from their caregiving experiences. I read Artichokes and Grace AFTER I provided care for my mother and sister. Had I read the book before, I would have had a much smoother time of it.
The reader will gain in their understanding of the aging process and how to navigate their own care for the elderly members of the family.
Managing the care of the elderly is a relatively new discipline. You can consider this book your how-to manual and be glad you read it.
Kristen Falde Smith writes a wonderfully warm, humorous, inspirational and informative account of caring for the aging through various narratives of others. You'll enjoy the experience of reading A & G and gain enlightenment and preparation for your own journey through assisted care.
  • Artichokes and Grace came into my life at the perfect time. Nearing the age of 60 myself, looking forward to retirement and being able to "rest and relax" is something that seems to be moving farther out of my reach. As your parents age, and roll reversal begins, it's not always an easy task. What's hardest for me is seeing the confusion on their faces, sharpness of mind being lost, not to mention their physical weakness. It's not always a matter of assistance, many times that comes with opposition, defiance and going around in circles. Artichokes and Grace helps you remember that we are (after all) human. It helps uplift your soul when you are feeling tired and worn, and helps you keep a positive outlook. It helps you have a better understanding for the aging process. After all, we will all ((hopefully) be there someday.
  • In Artichokes & Grace, Kristen Falde Smith has created a beautifully touching narrative about finding perspective and ultimately hope, through the difficult times of parental care and in the aging process. Through "her cast," she brings these wonderful stories to life, providing a sense of comfort and reassurance that I'm not alone. I learned several valuable lessons, especially about learning to laugh when things seem most difficult. I'm grateful that she's taken the time to share her wisdom for those of us who often feel lost or frustrated. I'd recommend this book for anyone who is currently involved in parent care, regardless of the level of difficulty you currently face. This book will help prepare you for the road ahead. The second half is also excellent, and I can't wait to begin planning my 2nd and 3rd acts! Thank you Kristen for this wonderful book!
  • I heard about Artichokes and Grace just after my mother- in- law passed away. I wish it had been before. She lived with us for 10 years and the last years of her life were often extremely difficult. She was frequently fearful and depressed and it felt as though there was no way to bring her joy. Her death brought huge waves of guilt for many in the family. After reading Artichokes and Grace, I can honestly say a cloud lifted. The vignettes were charming, as well as poignant, funny and instructive. It was helpful to read the stories of others and to understand that this is not an easy journey for anyone. Perspective is so helpful and this book provides much of that. I realized that death is much like birth. Everyone enters and exits this world in his or her own unique style and this book tells many of those special exit stories. This is a book which helps to lessen the burden on the caregiver while doing your best to say goodbye.
  • Nothing in the field like this.
    Don't miss it.
For forty years I worked in the field of aging ... and now am at that stage of life myself.
Would that I had had Artichokes and Grace as a resource throughout those four decades.
Kristen Falde Smith has given us a rich resource for understanding, navigating and appreciating all that aging brings and can be. This book will make your understanding keener, your caring deeper, your patience more persevering and your life richer. It is a gift for all of us fortunate enough to accumulate many years of living ourselves ... and for those doing similarly whom we care about deeply. This is not a "how to" book, and yet, through its unique approach, it helps to do just that. It is a powerful magnifying glass that makes accessible what is not obvious ... but which is "oh so meaningful."
    Don't miss out!
  • I purchased multiple copies of this as a gift for a few special woman in my life. All are very much enjoying these stories and have all mentioned they feel a little less alone with handling the issues around their aging parents. IF we are lucky, growing older is inevitable for all of us, but it doesn't mean have to deal with it alone.
  • I thoroughly enjoyed this insightful journey into looking at the aging process with a challenge to be grateful for all with which I have been blessed instead of focusing on the negative aspects of getting older myself and dealing with caring for my 90 year old mother and 94 year old father in law. This is a unique and inspiring read! Thanks Kristen, for giving us this wonderful perspective.
