"This is absolutely WRONG! This is a poorly printed photocopy of the original book, which you can find it here at Amazon for $15.00. Don`t buy this version, since it lacks images and the INDEX. This book is meant to be read by searching specific topics in the index, which this terrible version doesn`t have. I`m glad I`ve got a refund and Amazon didn`t even ask for a return. They must know this book is terrible and they should not even sell it. The LOOK INSIDE version displays the original one (blue cover), which makes everything much more confusing."

- This is absolutely WRONG! This is a poorly printed photocopy of the original book, which you can find it here at for $15.00. Don`t buy this version, since it lacks images and the INDEX. - This review is about the edition quality and not content... I thought the person that wrote the review saying this is a xeroxed copied of the book was just a fluke, it was not. You can tell someone xeroxed this book and had it rebound. That being said it doesn't bother me like it bothered the other reviewer. The text is a touch fuzzy from the copy and you can see the xerox outline on the pages but it is really light and don't think it would keep me from buying this book. I like the trade binding is nice and margins are large good for adding notes.
This review is in reference to the trade edition with the picture of the child on the front ISBN-13 9788087888568 2013 by Stellar Books - Considered one of the most fundamental and important books for traditional artists. While it is good, motivational, and inspiring, it is hard to read.Rather, not something one sits and reads fro cover to cover, but picks up and flips it open to discover always an important passage ro reminder, etc.
- A photocopied book! What a supreme insult and no mention of this in description. Shame.
- I like this, but he teaches impressionist painting like it's the once and future king of art. So, if you're in, you're in, and if you're out, you're out, so to speak. If you don't work in an impressionistic style, or if you're not a painter, and you can get past his approach and see what he has to say about being an artist in general, then he has some things to say that are of interest.
- Henri would not relate directly to his students while they were working; instead he would return to the classroom when it was empty, observe the various works of his students, and leave them notes to encourage and give direction to their work. Mostly these notes were poetic, metaphorical, oblique to the actual work. Henri, this great artistic soul, spoke through the work of his students, to the essential artist in them, deepening their connection to this in themselves and opening the doors for this essential artist to a truer expression. This book is a collection of those notes, to read cover to cover, or to open and read a page for insight into one's art or one's life. I myself have found that I have no apparent artistic ability, but through this much read and much appreciated little book, I have been made into an artist in my own inner and outer life and expression. I live a little deeper and with a greater clarity. My heart is opened with each reading. Every artist, philosopher and Lover of life should have the pleasure of this , the heart of Robert Henri.
- I'll let Henri speak for himself.
" ART when really understood is the province of every human being.
It is simply a question of doing things, anything well. It is not an outside, extra thing.
When the artist is alive in any person, whatever his kind of work may be, he becomes an inventive, searching, daring, self-expressing creature. He becomes interesting to other people. He disturbs, upsets, enlightens, and he opens ways for a better understanding. Where those who are not artisits are trying to close the book, he opens it, shows there are still more pages possible." (The Art Spirit, p. 15)
There a many fine books with pictures, illustrations, how to mix paints, set up your pallet, etc. This book is not one of those, but scattered among his philosophical inspiration are many pragmatic tips. I bought the book from recently to give to a relative who wondered if someone who was not an artist could learn to draw. This could be the start of a beautiful friendship! - ...from the mists of 95 years past, the voice of a master encouraging if not demanding your participation in the spirit of art.
