"First off I will say that the premise of this book is great. The quality of illustrations is great for the age (minus the content but I will get to that later). I am normally more positive about children's books, especially in this genre, but I regret buying this.

The storys are set up like a comic strip where the characters have speech bubbles. I find this layout ineffective, and annoying.
The big caveat is the content and writing is not for a child. My son has a huge vocabulary and at 5 years old, he would prolly test for about a 5th grade level of vocab, but I had to change tons of the words in this book for him to understand them. Normally I would just explain the words but there was just too many of them and the story would barely make sense because so many words were words that are not in typical use.

Then there is the issue of the content....yes, I know there is a lot of controversial stuff in the bible and the lives of martyrs but when you present these things to young kids, there needs to be a certain filter. My son cried so hard after we read the story of how Francis got the stigmata. He was so afraid he would get them. He had nightmares. I would not recommend this book for anyone under the age of 12 based on the lack of a content filter."

  • First off I will say that the premise of this book is great. The quality of illustrations is great for the age (minus the content but I will get to that later). I am normally more positive about children's books, especially in this genre, but I regret buying this.

  • Pauline Books & Media's graphic novels remain the most passed around books in my classroom- They pass from kid to kid, rarely making it back on the shelf!
These books are shorter in length but with larger pages and more traditional comic book style illustrations. I like that they are a quick introduction to the most important aspects of that Saints life. They are great for my students to read in small snippets throughout the day, and are enjoyed by all my students, but sometimes most especially by my lower or reluctant readers. I'm glad to have these as a resource to share with them these inspiring and strong heroes of the faith.
  • Excellent way to teach children to care about each other, and about all living creatures, beautiful illustrations…
  • I absolutely love this book (and series). My son is learning so much about the saints through this author and illustrator! He comes to me with facts that I wasn't even aware of. He has read it a few times and never seems to grow tired of the books. Thank you!

  • Good for older kids, maybe 8+ years old.
  • Good for children.
  • Saint Francis of Assisi Messenger of Peace is the life story of St. Francis in a graphic novel format. The book starts off with St. Francis' most famous prayer, "The Canticle of the Sun." I must admit that I find myself struggling with this prayer. Sometimes I like it, and other times it puzzles me. However, it wouldn't be a book about St. Francis if it didn't incorporate this prayer in there. The book then proceeds to cover his entire life from birth to death, including two key events in his life - the vision with the San Damiano Cross and his receiving of the stigmata. Lastly in this book is the Prayer for Peace, which serves as a perfect close for this book.

I really like that this book presents the whole truth of St. Francis' life. St. Francis wasn't born a saint, and this was shown by the way he lived his life before his conversion experience. This book doesn't gloss over these truths about his life, which is greatly appreciated. It also covered in detail, without being too gory, how St. Francis received the stigmata and the unusual treatment he received near the end of his life for an eye disease which afflicted him. The story flows nicely and has little headings in red text to highlight major events for your child. The illustrations are of high quality and will make this saint's story come alive for your grade school or middle school child, though older kids might like it as well.
