Victor Starspeeder is psyched to be starting school at the Jedi Academy. His sister, Christina does not share an enthusiasm for Victor's newfound educational path. She's horrified that her annoying baby brother will be there to cramp her style.
While Victor means well, his excess energy leads him to spend a lot of time in detention with the little, green sage, Yoda. Yoda wants to channel Victor's talents, so he makes the young Padawan join the drama club. Victor is not pleased. "Learn to control your anger, you must! Successfully manage their emotions, a good Jedi can. Box step and jazz hands ... hee hee ... young Padawan will!"
Victor will have to make new friends, get on his sister's good side, learn to use the force, and hope the year's drama club performance ("Wookiee Side Story"? "Annie Get Your Lightsaber"?) goes off without a hitch!

"My 7 year old son hated this book. He loved the first three and could not wait for this one. He read it and the change of authors was evident. He hated the characters and the style of writing. He had re-read the first three several times. I hope the original author comes back."

A New Class Star Wars Jedi Academy #4 Jarrett J Krosoczka 9780545875738 Books Reviews

  • Uninspired storytelling, rehashed work from the previous author, and a forced emotional connection that wasn't told through story.

I am unsure if the author is even a fan of Star Wars, as much as Brown was. The dialogue was inappropriate to the characters, with almost every page reading like an adults take of events rather than what the characters would be saying. I have avidly read the previous three books again and again, and I had to stop half way in this one. I eventually finished it, but it just got worse as it went along. No character was interesting, no plot point was fun, the art work was just too different to established art, and it left a poor impression of the other book to come. I mean, using Family Circus, Garfield, and Peanuts comics with a thin Star Wars veneer? What on Earth (or Coruscant) was Krosoczka thinking.

The attempt to make the reader feel engaged with the protagonist was just dreadful. His father is dead, he calls his stepfather by the first name, his sister doesn't talk to him in public, and he is just an arrogant idiot, with no redeeming features. He draws one awful drawing, and clearly that means he should be in the same dorm as the other art enthusiast students! We barely see anything about being a Jedi at all, at JEDI ACADEMY. The "love interest" doesn't care for him, is her own person (which is good), but it is presented in exposition! In one page!

This book was just... boring, and it shouldn't have been.
  • This review is from my 10 year old son, a huge fan of the earlier books -
"It's just a copy of the other three books, stuck together into one book, but with different characters. The main character is basically the same as Roan Novachez in the other books. Some of the people from the other books don't even look the same. I don't think the illustrator is very good. I wish I hadn't bought this book. It's not very exciting."
  • FYI, this is a different author and illustrator than the previous Jedi Academy book series. My son did not like it at all and he LOVED the previous Jedi Academy.
  • While my son did enjoy the book, he pointed out that it is a different author and illustrator from the previous books, as well as being about different characters. He is 11 and can read at a much higher level than this book, but enjoys a variety of levels to keep interest in reading. That said, this one seemed simpler than the others, perhaps due to the change in author. Overall good, but you might want to just check this one out from the library instead of purchasing.
  • My 9 year old son read the original 3 books a dozen times anxiously waiting for this one to come out. He was very disappointed when he read this one. He had expected that this book would be about the original characters in high school. The last page of the last book of the originals strongly implied that Roan's story would continue. He also didn't like the illustrations. He liked that some of the characters from the original books were back, but he didn't like that they were drawn differently. After he finished reading, he realized that this was written by a new author. (
  • My 7 year old son hated this book. He loved the first three and could not wait for this one. He read it and the change of authors was evident. He hated the characters and the style of writing. He had re-read the first three several times. I hope the original author comes back.
  • My son loves these books. It is great to hear him laughing while he reads. It's hard to find books that a 7 yr old will enjoy without a lot of inappropriate material.
  • One of the most favorite books of my grandchild. He has read this 3 times already and can't get enough of Krosoczka's work. Definitely a great read for a child who is a Star Wars Fan.
