The evolution of sustainability, with a practical framework for integration

Regenerative Development and Design takes sustainability to the next level, and provides a framework for incorporating regenerative design principles into your current process. The Regenesis Group is a coalition of experienced design, land-use, planning, business, and development professionals who represent the forefront of the movement; in this book, they explain what regenerative development is, how and why it works, and how you can incorporate the fundamental principles into your practice. A clear, focused framework shows you how to merge regenerative concepts with your existing work, backed by numerous examples that guide practical application while illustrating regenerative design and development in action. As the most comprehensive and systemic approach to regenerative development, this book is a must-have resource for architects, planners, and designers seeking the next step in sustainability.

Regenerative design and development positions humans as co-creative and mutually-evolving participants in an ecosystem—not just a built environment. This book describes how to bring that focus to your design from the earliest stages.

  • Understand the fundamentals of regenerative design and development
  • Learn how regenerative development contributes to sustainability
  • Integrate regenerative development concepts into practice
  • Examine sample designs that embody the regenerative concept

To create a design with true sustainability, considerations must extend far beyond siting, materials, and efficiency. Designers must look at the place, it's inhabitants, and the purpose—the whole living ecosystem—and proceed with their work from that more humbling perspective. The finished product should itself be an ecosystem and sustainable economy, which is the root of the regenerative development approach. Sustainability has evolved, and the designer's responsibility has increased in kind. Regenerative Development and Design provides an authoritative resource for those ready to take the next step forward.

"Excellent book for understanding how to regenerate communities, community projects and economic development based on understanding the essence of a place and it potential. The authors are the founders of those field. go to the source and avoid the distractions and also ran writers. It ihas so many wonderful case stories that make it able to be understood. • Architects, urban and city planners have an abiding faith in planning and design to create a better world...the physical forms we create will invoke a better life. The environments we design are intended to support life processes, but if we froze time and active life stopped, these physical forms would quickly loose their relevance...regardless of how beautiful and well planned the physical forms are. We realize that a "better world" really means that life is experienced as more purposeful and meaningful.

How can we plan and design our environments so that they have better outcomes in sustaining the evolution of living systems?

Jane Jacobs in her seminal book "The Death and Life of Great American Cities" (published in 1961) was one of the great pioneers in discovering and bringing to light the living processes of cities - the patterns that underlie our experiences of excitement, fun, appreciation, sense of community, belonging, fear, crime, and boredom in cities.

Pamela Mang and Ben Haggard have significantly extended this understanding with their book about regenerative development and design, an approach which has been under development for at least 30 years. This important book will empower you to approach our relationships to each other and the world, in ways that unleash new potentials for our evolution to be in a long term, vital relationship with the world. It is a holistic approach that seeks ways of adding value in all aspects of our existence, rather than, as all too often happens, increasing value in some aspects (i.e.. money) at the expense of others (i.e.. people, planet).

Their approach becomes very practical and real, as this work is done with stakeholders of and in their places. The "hidden" origin stories of people and place are revealed in ways that allow you to image new potentials for both. When planning and design is built on these deep patterns and potentials of people and place, then we, as professional designers and planners, can leverage our skills far, far more effectively than ever before...to indeed create environments for a better world.
  • A profound and powerfully educational piece of work written by true experts and brilliant teachers. The book not only walks the reader through essential regenerative project development & design skills, it also offers extremely helpful guidance in our own self-examination of how we perceive, organize and execute the work we do. I have been purchasing copies of this masterpiece for lending to folks who are working on various components of community & economic development and have recommended it as required reading for several community-oriented Boards. The knowledge contained in this gem of a book is practical and mandatory for anyone interested in & committed to community and planetary resilience.

  • I have been following Regenesis Group for a number of years while they have been doing incredibly important and meaningful work. This book provides readers with insight into the regenerative process and the value and healing it helps create. This should be mandatory reading for anyone truly interested in sustainabilty as more than a checklist. This is the way all development should be done - balancing ROI across financial, environmental, communal and human aspects of the built environment.
  • I have been interested in Regenerative design for several years, but until now have not found a study that so clearly and succinctly lays out principles, practices and way of thinking that foster it. Basic to this way of thinking is the awareness that we co-evolve with the community when we are able to interact creatively in the ongoing process of community design. This is not a matter of open meetings for feedback on a pre-determined proposal. It is a matter of engaging all stakeholders in the deeper questions of community vocation - the calling of each community, like each individual, to a sense of its uniqueness in the larger geographic and/or political system within which it is embedded, and challenging the community to design for potential expression of that uniqueness. People are not drawn to places like Santa Fe, NM for the big box stores on the edge of town. They are drawn by the cultural and architectural uniqueness developed there over hundreds of years. Living systems grow uniquely in relation to their environment. Likewise, it is only as we grow in our ability to understand patterns underlying change from the perspective of our uniqueness in geography and history will we be able to turn the tsunami of environmental an social devolution into a co-evolving, ever more sustainable future. This book is a wonderful start and reference for engaging community conversations around these opportunities, and a guideline for designing the processes that these conversations might suggest developing. It is also very readable, and full of examples of each principle described.
  • To be regenerative requires new beginnings and Pamela and Ben and the Regenesis team know this at a very deep level. Gem #1 for designers on Page 21 "If they accept it, designers can help correct the imbalances created by material cultures that have become divorced from natural order." Much harder to do is another of this books's suggestions, to examine the nature of the thinking that gives birth to a new idea. Gem #2 "Does (the thinking) arise from the need to address a problem, to fix or improve what exists? Or does it come from the desire for new ways to generate life and health? In other words, is it defined by existence or potential? Either can contribute to a more sustainable world, but only potential leads to regeneration." WHEW!
