Pulled Beneath The Bar Harbor Series Volume 1 Marni Mann 9781533095619 Books Reviews

  • It's strange sometimes how books come to you. I have 300+ Unread books on my kindle, but this one called to me. I was thumbing through FB when I saw this gorgeous yellow lab on a blogger site. It was Bella, one of the characters of this book!

Drew moved home after graduating from college trying to figure out what's next. What's next is a shocker, the brutal murder of her parents. Shortly after their death and still in the throws of profound grief, she learns she has inherited a family home in Maine. This home belonged to her grandparents and was where her mother grew up. Drew had heard stories of the small town in Maine her whole life, but she had been told her grandparents died when her mother was a child. As the truths that Drew believed about her life unravel, she slowly has to adjust and find a new peace. A integral part of her peace is a man named Saint aka Justin who sees her pain, relates to it and is the only one who can help her through it all...if she will let him! Bella, the lab, is by her side for the long haul as well!

This book is truly breathtaking and I think anyone can relate to it. After tragedy, we find ways to make peace of the chaos. For Drew it is the water and swimming, for others it may be running, meditation, or even reading.

This book reads as a standalone. There will be a second book about Rae. She is a fascinating character in this book and I can't wait to learn more!
  • It is so easy for an author to open up a book and tear it apart break down every sentence, every word, make the distinction of style and tone in her mind and internally note how she would write said book differently.

Pulled beneath the waves, into the hole I had climbed into. It was a dark, damaging place.

There is something important to be said about the same author experiencing this unintentional shift into a reader as the book's gorgeously written words push her into that hole. It's hard sometimes, once you've written books and stories and articles, once you've embraced your own authorship, to cut that instinct away and just really enjoy a story as a reader. But I never, ever have that problem with Mann's books.

Marni Mann makes it easy to be a reader.

It smelled just like him unpredictable and rough.

I love this novel. I love that it's NA and isn't led exclusively by sex. I love Drew's innocence. I have a very hard time relating to people, to characters, who have never struggled. Who have lived perfect lives. And Drew has, to a point, until nothing is perfect anymore, and it seems it never will be again. I'm used to that strong, independent female character who has struggled all her life and knows how to survive. But there is a certain strength in someone who doesn't know that, who hasn't been embedded with that survival skill, is branded by tragedy and rises above anyway. It's very rare that I come in contact with a character in this genre who is just, sort of perfect in her own way, in that every decision she makes is a good one, or at least one with good intentions. I guess that's another thing I love about Mann's novels. She writes about good people with bad cards. There is nothing more that I can relate to in this life.

    "Love."
"Love," I echoed before hanging up. With Gianna, the you had never been needed.
The word itself had always been enough.

I love Gianna, too. She is essentially me; a redheaded spitfire of a friend who knows nothing more than she knows loyalty and I think she was the perfect balance for Drew and everything that was going on with her. I love Saint, I love Maine through Mann's eyes.

I love Pulled Beneath. I am irrevocably in love with this novel.

    It's Mann's best work yet.
  • When Drew Stevens parents are brutally murdered in their own home she is devastated. Blaming herself for not being there with them her life slowly starts to spiral out of control. She becomes obsessed with swimming. It is her only escape from her grief and pain.

Several months later she receives yet another shock. While she was raised believing that she had no living family she is distraught to discover it was a lie. She has inherited the family home in Bar Harbor, Maine from the grandmother she never knew existed. Confused and angry about what she has discovered she goes to Bar Harbor with the intent of quickly settling her grandmother's estate and selling the home she has no interest in.

What she gets is handsome Justin Drake (aka Saint). While everyone she meets in Bar Harbor warns her to stay away from him she just can't seem to do it. In his eyes she recognizes someone who is familiar with pain as well and that connection calls to her.

I really enjoyed this book. There was such sadness where Drew is concerned. She was so lost at the beginning of the book. It was nice seeing her come out of the self imposed cage she built around herself. Saint was a mystery for a bit of the book. He was always so protective of Drew but also kept pushing her away. The rumors surrounding him weren't good and it was hard to decide if he was actually a good guy or not. There seemed to be an abundance of that with some of the secondary characters. As in life not everything is as it seems.

"I have to disagree with several of the above reviews of this second volume. These are memories, and perhaps, tall tales of Rob Maisch's youth and growing up.... from first dates, to concerts, to practical jokes and pranks at MSU, into bordom on the job, and finally failed relationships and salvation.

The format is more wide ranging than the first volume... selected tales that range true for me. That is, I attended MSU at approximately the same time, and though I did not run with his crowd, the appallingly bad taste in pranks and some of the specific details of the three illustrated in this volume can be verified. Yes, the phone numbers were sequential at MSU. Yes, phone pranks of this type were done, with varying degrees of success... The abuse and destruction hinted at by this rat pack DID occur... and finally, I too, frequented the Curious Book Shop during this period in East Lansing... and so "Klingon Battle Helmet" also has the ring of truth.

While I didn't live in Midland, Michigan... I was just 60 miles south... and so, I identify with the settings of his tales... Bob Segar as the best kept secret... area concerts... shouting wars between dorms.

But where others doubt the details, I accept them. And more, I can find several themes of development running through this, the second volume of recollections.

Here's my speculation: Just as recovering AA members admit their mistakes and flaws... just as "Earl" on NBC is retracing his misteps to make things right in his life... Maisch MAY be doing a similar process here. They say confession is good for the soul? Perhaps that is what he is doing here...."Confessions of a Cereal Eater". There is some parallel structure in these stories.... first, innocense and not so innocent love and lust... Disrespect of other people and property... Using women for fun and humor... and finally, having the love of a good woman redeem one from the abiss and pull you back from the brink. At least, that's what I see happening in this collection of tales.

Of course, I could be dead wrong. This may be nothing more than a random collection of recollections and tall tales that were left over from the first volume (published seven years ago) or perhaps these are the scattershot works of amateur artists that skip significant development and linking transitions in a body of work that was not fully illustrated.

But until I can find the author (and believe me, I am trying to find him as I write this) I can only judge on what made it into print. I don't disagree that some of the pranks are mean, irreverent, and show immaturity... but I think that is part of the appeal. To listen to a bad boy confess his dirty deeds, and ultimately, show that he hasn't fully grown out of his bad ways, certainly draws you in.

(The final page in my book, is the one page coda "Late One Night" which shows that he is still rude and tactless as he encourages a Match Game contestant to make the obvious connection to "Muther*****" to the embarassment of his significant other who is waiting for him. But then, the book is listed as 98 pages, and my last page is 96... so I don't know if I have a complete copy!)

I think there is something of merrit here. It won't be the most significant book you ever buy, but I can confirm some of the details in what is presented as his rememberances.

Except for the adult content, I say go ahead and splurg. But just don't show this to the kids who haven't gone to college yet. It just might give them ideas. (I know it did for me....I'm making a list of pranks and college experiences in the hopes of making a similar book someday...)"

In the last days before Christ's return, deception will be a key component in Satan's arsenal. Biblical truth will be the only weapon needed, to stop any religious myths from taking hold.

When an accurate Biblical Rapture is very different from what's being taught in the body of Christ, deception is quite evident. It is every Christian's individual responsibility to be equipped with truth and the power of the Holy Spirit, thus shining light on the darkness.

Let's put the scriptural pieces together and see an accurate account of Jesus' return. Jesus is not coming back to retrieve the Christians. He is coming back to retrieve the Holy Spirit that's supposed to be in the Christians. If there's enough Holy Spirit in us to collect, we will be transfigured and caught up to meet Him.

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

More people than ever before see themselves as addicted to, or recovering from, addiction, whether it be alcohol or drugs, prescription meds, sex, gambling, porn, or the internet. But despite the unprecedented attention, our understanding of addiction is trapped in unfounded 20th century ideas, addiction as a crime or as brain disease, and in equally outdated treatment.

Challenging both the idea of the addict's “broken brain” and the notion of a simple “addictive personality,” Unbroken Brain offers a radical and groundbreaking new perspective, arguing that addictions are learning disorders and shows how seeing the condition this way can untangle our current debates over treatment, prevention and policy. Like autistic traits, addictive behaviors fall on a spectrum -- and they can be a normal response to an extreme situation. By illustrating what addiction is, and is not, the book illustrates how timing, history, family, peers, culture and chemicals come together to create both illness and recovery- and why there is no “addictive personality” or single treatment that works for all.

Combining Maia Szalavitz’s personal story with a distillation of more than 25 years of science and research, Unbroken Brain provides a paradigm-shifting approach to thinking about addiction.

"As a recovery advocate and the father of someone in long-term recovery, I've read more books about addiction than I can count. When my son first started struggling with drugs, I made a vow to educate myself as much as I possibly could. Knowledge is power, and I wanted to know *everything* about addiction. I still do. So I read about it. A lot. And I can honestly say that Maia Szalavitz's "Unbroken Brain: A Revolutionary New Way of Understanding Addiction" is one of the best books I've ever read on the subject.

Maia Szalavitz is a fabulous writer who has penned a wonderful, very forward-thinking book about addiction. She introduces us to some new theories about addiction, several of which may have people re-examining the way they've thought about one of the most prevalent and deadliest problems in America today.

Szalavitz sets out to show that addiction isn’t a choice or moral failing. "But it’s not a chronic, progressive brain disease like Alzheimer's, either," she notes. “Instead, addiction is a developmental disorder--a problem involving timing and learning, more similar to autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and dyslexia than it is to mumps or cancer." Yes, Szalavitz is blazing new trails here.

The author contends that "addiction doesn't just happen to people because they come across a particular chemical and begin taking it regularly. It is learned and has a history rooted in their individual, social, and cultural development." She adds that the addicted brain is not "broken," as many other researchers and writers have suggested. Instead, she says, the addicted brain has "simply undergone a different course of development....addiction is what you might call a wiring difference, not necessarily a destruction of tissue."

Looking at addiction as a learning disorder may seem strange to some, but Szalavitz states that doing so "allows us to answer many previously perplexing questions." And in "Unbroken Brain," Szalavitz--who is 25+ years in recovery from cocaine and heroin addiction herself--tells us how learning is a part of every aspect of addiction, oftentimes drawing upon her personal experience to illustrate her points.

There are so many interesting and thought-provoking topics covered in this book. From the problems associated with waiting for someone to hit "rock bottom" to the myth of the addictive personality; and from the issues surrounding 12-step programs to why harm reduction isn't a bad thing. ("Harm reduction recognizes [the] social and learned components of addiction. It 'meets people where they're at,' and it teaches them how to improve their lives, whether or not they want to become abstinent." Amen to that.)

If you or someone you love has been touched by addiction, or if you're just interested in this fascinating subject, I cannot recommend "Unbroken Brain" highly enough. This book contains a wealth of information, but Maia Szalavitz presents it in an organized manner while writing in a clear and understandable voice. Trust me: You will not be bombarded with a bunch of scientific language that you don't understand.

Szalavitz writes in the introduction, "Only by learning what addiction is--and is not--can we begin to find better ways of overcoming it. And only by understanding addicted people as individuals and treating them with compassion can we learn better and far more effective ways to reduce the harm associated with drugs." That is definitely the approach we should be taking with addiction. Hopefully, Maia Szalavitz's innovative new book will be the catalyst for some positive change."

  • Because I'm a substance abuse counselor, people have often asked me to recommend a book about addiction. For thirty years, the only one I ever urged people to read has been the Big Book of AA, written eighty years ago, when we knew next to nothing about addiction. I’ll get into the reason why I recommended it in a minute. I’m happy to say that now there’s a better book for anyone interested in learning about addiction, drawing on the latest findings, written by an award winning journalist and recovering addict, Maia Szalavitz. Her book is Unbroken Brain.

The central premise to Unbroken Brain, is that we’re in the middle of an epidemic of addiction and we are stuck in treating it ineffectively when there are better methods available. One in ten Americans are in the throes of some type of substance use disorder. That’s 23 million and doesn’t even count tobacco addiction and the myriad millions who have behavioral addictions to sex, gambling, shopping, etc; nor, one third of Americans who overeat and are said to be addicted to food. At the same time, pharmaceutical companies, tobacco companies, alcohol companies, agribusiness companies, casinos, lotteries, and every store at the mall all seem to know how to induce addiction for their purposes. We need some new ideas to help people, or, at least, stop recycling old ideas that don’t work.

The first idea that doesn’t work is throwing addicts in jail. Think about it; addiction is defined as using, despite negative consequences. Why then would we believe that applying negative consequences would treat addiction? It makes no sense, but we do it anyway.

I’ll tell you why we do it. AA taught us to. Yes, the Big Book of AA, that other book I told you about, the only one I ever could recommend, has taught us that addicts have to hit bottom, they have to lose everything and become totally humiliated before they will ever change. It’s this idea which justifies the drug war, mass incarceration of addicts, and many of the other degrading things we put addicts and their families through.

This is where I give you the reason I have never been able to recommend any book other than the Big Book of AA. It’s because the field of addiction has been so dominated by it, that no one has been able to go further, or contradict, the ideas found there. Almost everything else that has been written about addiction is based on AA principles.

When I began working in the addictions field, practically everyone else working as a counselor was a recovering addict. AA had saved their lives. They were consequently devoted to AA and, when they wrote books and designed what were supposed to be professional treatment programs based on science and best practices, they just repeated AA slogans and principles. That’s fine as long as AA works, but frequently it doesn’t work; actually, more often than not, it doesn’t. seventy percent of the people who try AA-like groups drop out within six months.

If a doctor had a pill that 70% of her patients stopped taking before the course of treatment was complete, she’d conclude that the pill had serious side effects, instead of just blaming the patients for being uncooperative. In addiction treatment we blame the patients. We say they haven’t hit bottom yet. They have to hit bottom before they will get serious.

I didn't enter the addictions field by first being in recovery. I entered it because I wanted to be a counselor and saw opportunities there. When I began, I found that the counselors were treating clients very differently than they way I was taught to treat them in school. I was taught to respect clients, offer them unconditional positive regard, and put them in the driver’s seat. What I saw was the opposite. Chemical dependency counselors were very directive; they told people when and how they were full of shit, and made decisions for them. They said a client’s best thinking got them in this mess; it was not able to get them out. They said that an addict is lying whenever his lips are moving. When I objected, I was told things had to be different in chemical dependency. Addicts would take advance of my naiveté. My education had not prepared me for the real world. An addict’s mind was broken, they said, we can’t expect it to work like everyone else’s.

According to Szalavitz, they’re wrong and I should have believed what I was taught in school all along. Addiction does not break a brain, nor is it caused by a broken one. She characterizes addiction as a developmental disorder, like autism, ADHD, or dyslexia; which arises as an attempt to solve problems like trauma, interpersonal conflict, and sensitivity to stimulation, for which the person’s brain is not yet equipped; and one which resolves itself if the person is given the opportunity to learn from their mistakes. Indeed, the vast majority of addictions begin in adolescence and most end by the time the brain is mature around age thirty.

If we treated others who have a developmental disorder as we do addicts, we would tell the kid with dyslexia, for instance, that nobody could help him until he came to the realization that he was powerless over his dyslexia. We would punish him whenever he spelled a word wrong and, if he continued to do so, would throw him out of school, and maybe into jail. Not only would we fail to teach him, but we would call anyone else who had patience for him codependent and enabling. That’s not what we do with dyslexics, not any more, anyway; consequently, most compensate for their dyslexia and learn to read.

The concept of hitting bottom undermines AA’s other, more accurate, principle that addiction is a disease. It justifies the criminalization, discrimination, and humiliation of addicts. It spawns “tough love” approaches and the pathologizing of loved ones as codependent. It led to abusive methods in many other “therapeutic communities.” It leads to seventy percent of the people walking out.

There are many more points Szalavitz makes in this quite comprehensive book about addiction. She reviews in detail the connection between our drug policies and racism. She gives us the the dope on dopamine. She describes the twin hooks of wanting and having. She gets autobiographical, revealing her own transit into and out of addiction. But, for me, it is the counterpoint she provides to the last great book about addiction that is most valuable. Read Unbroken Brain if you need to understand something about addiction.

<i>Keith Wilson writes on mental health and relationship issues on his blog, <a href="https//keithwilsoncounseling.com/articles-2/"> Madness 101 </a></i>
  • As a physician in recovery, I was excited to see the author expand on the idea of addiction as a developmental disorder, a view I share. I was quite disappointed, however, that the author uses these ideas to launch her personal attack on the 12 step recovery model. Though that model does not work for everyone, it has worked for many. She suggests that the model is akin to breaking patients down with "hours of spitting, shouting, name calling, and repeatedly listing every flaw of his character." She likens it requiring "a patient to sit facing a wall, carry humiliating signs or wear diapers." The author tells us that the 12 step approach "can be used to justify disrespectful and abusive tactics," and that "humiliating participants is acceptable." Her revulsion is understandably driven by her early treatment experience in a therapeutic community that was rather traumatic and would never be tolerated in a 12 step meeting or recovery group. As a youth, she was required to sit rigidly for hours on end while being subjected to emotional attack along with another girl who eventually sued the "treatment" program exposing the sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. As a fellow person in recovery, I relate to her struggle as well as her frustration with the current views the world holds on addiction. But I hardly find it necessary to debase a grass roots organization that, in my personal experience, has never offered anything other than love and acceptance and a way to begin healing from the trauma of addiction through personal development.

Son Rise The Miracle Continues Barry Neil Kaufman Raun Kaufman 9780915811618 Books Reviews

  • This is a powerful book for your collection and is genuinely a must read for any parent, caregiver, teacher, therapist, everyone really. The concept is so basic that it’s amazing that it hasn’t caught on sooner. Having intuitively parented with these principles prior to hearing of the program, this book offered me a lightbulb moment. I can now easily explain why what we do works. Is it slightly against the grain of what we think we know as a society? Yes. This is one of many reasons why it works. Open your mind, lead with your heart and allow your child to reach you. Most important takeaway? Please, please stop discouraging self stimulatory behaviors. You may not yet understand them, but your ASD loved one most certainly does. Stimming is essential and serving many essential needs. I implore you to read this and simply give it a whirl. The results will amaze you, for it can be no other way. Your child or loved one profoundly wishes to communicate with you. They already are. If they are non verbal, you essentially have someone who doesn’t have English as a first language. Would you be respectful and courteous to a foreigner? I hope so. Would you learn some of their words and customs while offering to teach them yours? Yes?
Then you can reach your child using that same basic principle. Don’t believe the hype out there, it’s largely based on misinformation. Try this instead and watch your child rise.
  • I chose this rating for many reasons. I was able to easily read and understand what the author was communicating, so I appreciated the writing style. This is such a difficult subject to read about. Maybe a reader is in denial and the characteristics shared of the autism spectrum gets it right in their face if their child has the same characteristics. Or, maybe the reader has already broken through the denial, and has grieved the loss of expectations of the child's independent future being a productive member of society. This book gives hope---that this grief could possibly be the only destroyer of these parental dreams and expectations for their kid. There is hope the journey will make whatever the outcome a loving family of close connections, happy in their lives together.
  • I vaguely remember watching part of this movie as a child. The mother in the movie was teaching a small child that was rocking back and forth. Who knew that this was a true story and that the child later graduated from Brown University? Now I have an autistic child of my own. Finding this book was part of the beginning of my own journey. I have removed my son from a public school-based preschool. Now I teach him at home for hours each day. It is not always easy. I am only a few months into my own Son-Rise program, but my son's eye contact has greatly improved. His affection has also increased and his use of speech for communication. The school wanted him to use the picture method instead of language. Most importantly I now I have hope for my son's future. Thank you Barry and Samahria Kaufman for paving the way.
  • This book is truly magical. This story is remarkable and led us to choose Son-RIse for our son. Thank you to the Kaufman's for sharing their story decades ago and providing this learning opportunity for all parents with children who have special needs. This book is a must-read. It will open your eyes to what is possible for your child.
  • As a parent of an autistic little boy i can say this is a beautiful book with infinity ways help us to open our eyes and trying a new approach at the autism world.
  • Very moving. Well worth the read. I wish I had read this book first thing upon receiving my sons ASD diagnosis.
  • Will change your outlook on life especially if you have an "oh woes is me" mentality. With love all things are possible. Should read. Absolutely everyone. Thank you so much to the Kaufman family. You are all Angels! Was recommended by Dr. Wayne Dyer. Thanks to Wayne again for another great and inspiring book to read. Will definitely suggest to everyone I know to read.
  • Love the story, love the narrative. Some times Mr. K is a bit to wordy and flowery (like he's writing prose) for a basic historical event. Overall the book events these parents went through are amazing and inspirational.

Raging Heart is so revealing that the book itself became part of the actual O.J. Simpson murder trial.

It is the only book to trace the path of O.J. and Nicole's fatal love story through the eyes of the people who really knew them. Acclaimed journalist Sheila Weller gained the unprecedented cooperation of Nicole Brown Simpson's family, and had exclusive access to O.J. and Nicole s friends who reveal private information here for the first time.

Though the story that unfolds in Raging Heart was never fully explored in court, the revelations from its incisive reporting sent shock waves through the trial. Raging Heart is full of explosive information from people who knew, but couldn't or wouldn't tell their stories on the witness stand.

As vivid as a home movie, Raging Heart is an explicit, heartrending look behind the verdict of the century and the one book the O.J. Simpson jurors would be astonished to read.

"I just read this book. I had already read Faye's book after the trial, then I just read OJ's If I did it book, I then re read Fayes and now this one. Its really a great compilation seeing everything fit together.

I really like a lot of the backdrop and various accounts on stories, more detail to stories already told or some that I never knew.

Such as Nicoles Breasts being slashed not being mentioned, or that Nicole kept Dr. Susans Forwards Obsessive Love Book around the home and met with her twice for counsel on her situation.

Accounts from various friends in their lives and Nicoles own family, this one has more bio on Nicoles life and family as a child and up until OJ entered the picture.

You can see where a woman was trapped by control, by expectations from friends and family, by lack of help from the police the numerous times she phoned them.

How Nicole had a mixed up sense of Love with OJ, and how young she was when she met him(how she came home with her pants torn and held them shut after their first date) He tore them to have sex with her.

Nicole was truly formed as a teen and was now trying to find her own identity but also deal with the insanity that was OJ. A quote in the book I think sums it up....

"It was precisely that charm, alternating with rage, precisely that Jekyll-Hyde quality, Dr. Forward explained to Nicole made OJ so dangerously hard to deal with. As she observed: "The switching from charm to rage leaves you totally off balance. Everything thats right on Monday is wrong on Tuesday. So your always watching- your on emotional alert all the time."

I recommend this book if you devour info on this case! And a good book for those dealing with Domestic Violence because you can see Nicoles back and forthness on trying to reconcile vs getting him out of her life, she never really could get him away."

  • Poor writing. A lot of untruths. This book was PUBLISHED 6 months after the murders. Hell, the trial lasted more than 6 months. I read so many inconsistencies in this book, they are too numerous to mention. The writer wrote about all the fabled tales from people who are notorious liars (Jill Shivley), The writer failed to mention why Kato Katlin did not want to testify, and asserted his rights and refused to incriminate himself. Kato went in to be interviewed, he was told by Clark that he had to testify that DAY to the Grand Jury. When his NEW lawyer said he needed time to speak to his client, Clark wouldn't bulge. The Superior Court gave his council until Monday to familiarize himself to the case. Maybe the Shelia Weller had no idea of these facts when she wrote the book. There was nothing sinister about this.

While I was reading about Nicole's life before her murder, I had little sympathy for her. She only worked 2 weeks in her ENTIRE LIFE at her one and only job when she was 18. Everything she obtained was through OJ. When I read of her many affairs, with several different men, I counted 6 boyfriends in a 2 year period while she was still legally married to OJ, I was disgusted. She even had an affair with Marcus Allen while he was MARRIED! She was constantly partying, hanging out with YOUNG men, early 20s, while she was in her mid 30s, I wondered about the children. She had a housekeeper and Kato, plus a babysitter. Why? She had no job. Was she neglecting her children to party? She wanted OJ to break the law, and say she was living in Rockingham while she lied to the IRS and said she rented the Bundy condo because she didn't want to pay $90 thousand in taxes. My God, the woman got almost half a million in the divorce settlement. They had been divorced for 2 years, and she didn't want nothing to do with OJ, why would he lie for her? I wonder, if she had not been murdered, how she expected to support herself? I read that OJ gave her $10 grand a month for child support. Then, I wonder, why would you stay with a man that abused you? The mind games these two played with each other was just crazy.

I do believe that OJ did commit the murders, but I think he has no memory, or has blocked it out of his mind. The Jodi Arias "fog" syndrome. Ron Goldman...how tragic, he was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Here, I think, if Judith had not left her eyeglasses at the restaurant, Ron Goldman would still be alive. Curious, when I have left something at an establishment, they never personally brought it to me at my home, I always had to go pick it up myself...unless...the candles and the romantic music was for Ron. The writer also stated that Ron walked to Nicole's condo, when he actually drove his friends car. Another untruth.

  • The book is written in Spanish, so you must know the language to understand the text . It is an excellent source for a beginner to advanced level. The book covers history, art and techniques for building a nativity scene. Unfortunately, the author decided to print the photos in black and white for the book to be inexpensive. The color photos would have been better to compliment the text.

  • Amazing, inspires you to create!

  • amazing!!!
    love it!!!!
  • La juste realite

The World According to Dog Amusing Life Lessons Taught To Us By Dogs Tori Levitt 9781790977567 Books Reviews

  • Tori writes with deep understanding of our dogs emotional and physical health, their undivided love for their pet parents, as well as their ability to provide us with sanity and healing we never expected.
Writing from the heart, Tori tells stories of her canine guests over the years, often amusing, each however, special with its own story.
Your takeaway from Tori's book is huge as she covers puppyhood to Seniors, how to train, entertain and care for, feed and nurture at all stages your canine family member and finally how to let go and allow a peaceful passing.
Tori advocates our moral responsibility to combat animal cruelty by reporting abuse, supporting animal rights legislation, participating in fostering and adoption from Rescue groups. Throughout the book, she cites websites and contacts for every aspect of caring for your pet. This is a 5 Star Book!!
  • This book is a must read for every dog lover , whether you own one or thinking about adopting a pup and even if you don’t have your own. Coming from a veterinary back ground I felt I am very knowledged on our furry friend but I sure gained more insight and additional awareness about Dog’ s from this book . Also made me realize all that we can learn from a dog. The author Tori L. In such simple understandable manner has poured out her heart her real time life experience . In this book she in many ways expresses her thoughts to humans that dog is not just a dog but far above that , with love , fear and emotions. As I read her book the many stories came live to me . This book is not just a novel but a real life experience of the author over many years and all about dogs who have been part of her .
The book even touch’s on some simple training tips, about questions you need to ask yourself before going forward to adopt, how to help the new comers to adapt them to their new family.
I Learnt the benefits and the fulfillment of rescueing a pup . From the book we can see the novel way of petsitting Cage Free successful service she manages. See Happy pets and their smile is her goal.
I greatly recommend this book to every one. You will enjoy the humor, little bit of sadness that omakes people to rethink that dogs are voiceless and we humans are whom they solely trust and depend on. The greatness of this book is a true life time experience that touched me and opened my eyes .
I am asking my whole family to read it Thank you MS Tori Levitt for sharing this wonderful true life events with our Defenseless Creatues and for being there for them when ever you had the opportunity. In my opinion whoever loves’ cares and respects our furry friend has to be a wonderful human being.
  • I thought i knew everything about my beloved Havanese Jesse, yet I was pleasantly surprised to learn more about her unique breed nuances, and what makes her tick deep down. I knew she was smart, yet Tori's book helped me understand
just how smart all dogs are, and the "why" behind their genius. A humorous read, and the exclusive discount offers for activity boxes will be fun for my Jesse too! a perfectly priced book to give as gifts to my dog owning friends...
  • A definite must read as the author has included so much information regarding the world of dogs under one cover. The author has a deep compassion, love and understanding of the behavior and needs of dogs and their owners. It is well written with humor, photos, and encouragement for a dog owner to be the best they can be with their beloved pet. This is an excellent guide for prospective dog owner.
  • There are thousands of dog books. This is not just another dog book. It is a beautifully written and multilayered discussion of dog care, dog behavior and dog owner behavior woven together with a series of examples and anecdotes that ring true with the passion of someone who loves dogs. The author's extraordinary knowledge and understanding of canines is evident on every page and will benefit even the experienced dog owner. Not to be missed is the more muted under story of the author's evolution from real estate mortgage broker to corporate dog care maven. She followed her dream.
  • When you finish a book with a smile and a tear, you know you've found a gem! Entertaining real life stories intertwined with practical advice from a passionate Dog Mom. Tori takes us on her journey from mortgage banker to owner of the concierge pet care center, Doolittle's Doghouse. As a lifelong dog Mom, I was surprised and delighted by the poignant tidbits of information sprinkled throughout this engaging book. Interestingly, when you learn something new about your best furry friends, you also learn something new about yourself. Looking forward to a sequel ~
  • I wrote this book from the heart and based on 10 years of catering to canines....not just mine, but those who belong to others. I hope you laugh...learn something new...and share with your friends. I especially enjoyed sharing the Epilogue (poem) "Why God Made Dogs". That alone will make you cry with joy and understanding of where our hearts lie and why.
  • I’m a crazy dog person and this book is a wonderful read. The insight into the mystery of a dog is funny and also helpful. No dog is alike except breed traits. They all have their own wonderful personalities as the author portrays! Read this and enjoy!

Her heart was fragile from too much pain--would her defenses push Ross away?

Ross felt panicked. His words had hurt her. It surprised him, given the way she handled the harsh circumstances of her life. First her mother's death. Then her father's. Then losing the land.

Was his compassion for the vulnerable young woman turning to love? And if it was love, what would he do now? "Please, God," he prayed. "Help me. Show me."

A poignant tale about love fulfilled, A Gathering of Memories will capture the hearts and minds of romantics everywhere.

"What can I say? I didn't think I was ever going to make it through because I cried so much! I loved the ending. It was so very romantic, and so innocent! I'm also glad Lori Wick put the epilogue in so I would know just what happened in the end. I wish we could continue with this family forever, but this is a good stopping place.

I ached for Amy who remained childless. I was so happy she and Silas were able to take in the five orphans, and I was happy to read about Mandy and Ross as they fell in love. The whole thing was indeed romantic. I'm just so happy!!! It was just an EXCELLENT book. They all were wonderful, but I must say this one may have been the best of them all...

Luke and Christine, Silas and Amy, Paul and Abby, and now Ross and Amanda...And another surprise couple that got together. I won't spill the beans on who it was, but I was pleasantly surprised!

Now, on to the next series "The Californians.""

  • This final book in the series was as good as the others. The only thing I would have changed was the whole situation with the land and Aaron Marks. I wouldn't change the result of it, but maybe a few more twists and turns, and a little more in-depth description of the gun scene, rather than telling it in flashback. Otherwise a great story. I love how it tells Ross' love story. He was in the last book, and I think readers would be curious about his continued story.

  • The forth and final book in the A Place Called Home Series. (sigh) Although I enjoyed all four books, this one may have been the best of the bunch. Silas and Amy were so sweet. (I picture Sam Elliot in my mind as Silas) Most of the book - well, at least a good part of it - was like a reunion. We got to revisit every as well as make some new friends. And the way the Cameron's adopted the Jackson's was so heart warming. Sad to see the series end.
  • Really enjoyed this book, the whole series was captivating! Enjoyed how every character grew and evolved! Each story touched my 💓 in a special way!
  • I loved this entire series! Totally in my top 5 of Novel Series. Lori is great, really takes you into the story, into this family, so much that it was really sad to let them go.
This book is about the gathering of all the family but has this special twist where we find they had place to enlarge the family to new members! Specially for Amy and Silas.
Love to see them all reunited. It was a pleasure to read!.
  • as advertised
  • Wicks books are always good and inspiring. I wish she would write more in current times. Love her quoting scripture.
  • Great book. Geat author

Scientific Healing Affirmations SelfRealization Fellowship Paramahansa Yogananda 9780876121443 Books Reviews

  • This book is wonderful and so powerful. I cannot thank Yogananda enough for this book and for all others he authored. The practice of positive affirmation has changing my life in a way that is just fabulous. You can heal yourself by adding regular meditation to your life routine and the positive affirmations create a healing force that can produce miracles. If you truly believe in God, and that God is absolute health this book will change your life. I love this book! Thank you Yogananda!
  • This sweet book packs a punch - it's loaded with powerful information everyone should know for healing the body, mind and soul through focused attention and intention using affirmations. The insights on how we can use our own temperament to maximize our power when doing healing affirmations, is unique, I've never come across that anywhere else. I keep having to replace mine because I can't seem to hang onto them, someone is always wanting to borrow one.
  • I had never heard of Paramahansa Yogananda, but found out about him while viewing some video's on YouTube about Reiki. I was so impressed, that I immediately signed into and did a search on this title (Scientific Healing Affirmations). I ordered it, and could not wait to receive it. I was surprised at how small it was, and thought that I would encounter some far fetched Eastern Guru mumbo jumbo, but instead what I found was a profound man/saint who seemed to have found God. I am still on my journey to Him, and I feel that Yoganandaji will be a tremendous influence on me! I have never felt so uplifted and spiritually "tuned in" as I am when I'm reading his words or even looking at his image. I truly feel that he found God, and wants to bring the world to the same point. I have ordered several of his books, and can't wait to receive the others. I also have "Sayings of Paramahansa Yogananda" and the Divine Romance, which I haven't started yet.
The 'trick' for me is to stop each day and take the time to read and practice what I'm reading. Right now, I'm hoping to find the path to true health through affirmations. I have highlighted this little treasure and keep repeating the highlighted passages. I could highlight every line and each would have just as much relevance as the other.
If you are looking for some truly deep reading, in a clear, concise format, with wonderful information, this is the author for you!

  • Somehow my Spiritual Diary of 15 years had disappeared and I love it. Perhaps it will turn up but I didn't want to wait! This little book gives inspiration on a daily basis and I will soon have little tabs here and there. It has supported my ups and downs that life gives. Good thing I like challenges! I was totally delighted that it came so fast.

And this little book just might help you more than you might ever expect.
  • I love anything by Yogananda and this little book is packed with spiritual power! Reciting these affirmations can have a life changing effect on your life if you utter them with faith and regularity.
  • Very little here; what is there can be used for powerful results, but do not expect a book. Only a few affirmations and a couple of exercises.
  • I love Autobiography of a Yogi. However, though the concepts are great, the writing couldn't be much harder to follow, aided in good part by extremely bad proofreading. The errors are many and actually slow the reading down. I'd buy another copy of this book. This digital version needs a proper proofing.
